Etched Dress Bayonets
(Extra-Seitengewehre)
1933-1945 |
|
|
|
|
Prior to the exampled pictured here, I know of only one other etched dress bayonet in existence with the template pattern presented here. In (my book) The Addendum, Tom Wittmann’s Special Order Navy bayonet from Carl Eickhorn uses the same pattern shown here. One of the differences between our two examples is that Tom Wittmann’s Navy is of the “short” variety while he example introduced here is the longer type offering more of the beautiful template pattern to be appreciated by the viewer. See pictures.
The original owner Helmut Gidmann is introduced on the obverse “blued panel” using a font that closely resembles the Navy cousin and is in the same design. A most attractive oak leaf and acorn template pattern can be seen before and after the “name” area. See pictures.
After admiring the Staghorn Grip plates that fit perfectly to the Hilt area we can turn the bayonet to the reverse side, again revealing the oak leaf and acorn pattern leading up to, and away from, the blued area this time depicting an airplane in flight.*
An absolutely stunning example of a Special Order, Named, Blue Panel, Luftwaffe presentation. A one of a kind etched bayonet to be sure. For the advanced collector.

A SPECIAL COLLECTOR OFFER |

Not an Etched Dress Bayonet, but most certainly a Third Reich collectible, this Third Reich 1941 lead crystal ashtray would be a stand out item in any collection.
This six sided (hexagon) one of a kind ashtray has a personal citation….”Maurer S/1 Oberzahmister” and was presented as a gift to Maurer a Senior Paymaster by subordinate employees in War Christmas 1941. The metalwork border is solid SILVER and has a Silver hallmark Number on the rim. See pictures.
On TWO sides of the hexagon are beautifully etched Third Reich Eagles over Swastikas. See pictures. Truly a remarkable one of a kind Veteran “bring back” souvenir.

Beer Steins of the German Empire in the Imperial Period, Great War, Weimar Period and the Third Reich era’s. |
|

One of the most overlooked collectible areas in our hobby of militaria is collecting the beautiful picturesque art associated with the Beer Steins of the German Empire in the Imperial Period, Great War, Weimar Period and the Third Reich era’s.
Many different varieties of Steins could be purchased by Officers and Enlisted men showing pride in their previous or present service time.
I was fortunate in finding a 1905 – 1907 Beer Stein with a listing of Unteroffiziers (NCO’s) in the 3d Infantry Regiment, Prince Karl of Bavaria 1st Company, Augsburg. See Pictures.
Among the names listed is an NCO named Maurer. If this soldier was perhaps twenty years old (give or take) he would be old enough in 1941 to be a Senior Paymaster receiving an elaborate ashtray as a gift at Christmas from his subordinates. See Ashtray Special Offer Above. Of course certainty is not guaranteed, but can’t be positively ruled out either. Just a great coincidence that could be investigated further. The beautiful Beer Stein (with a Pewter decorative cap) has a Lithopane picture bottom showing a Soldier holding a Stein of Beer with his lady friend in admiration. See Picture.
Condition: is MINT considering its age, no chips or cracks.
The height of the Stein is 11 inches
Comes with: Translation of all wording on Stein.
Beer Volume is .51 liters
The Stein and Ashtray (listed above) should be sold together.
Stein & Ashtray – Price $1,675.00

Speaking of beer steins offered for the first time, this one from the Third Reich era, (possibly 1938 or so) reflects a pride of being in Luftwaffe service. This is a VERY RARE and HARD to FIND LUFTWAFFE beer stein with three unique representations of Luftwaffe personnel action scenes. See pictures.
Opposite the grip is a scene with five beautiful biplanes almost in a 3D image flying through the blue sky. If you look closely you can see a Swastika design in the tail section of the most prominent biplane. See picture. The Remembrance service time motto is nicely inscribed underneath.
On the right side of the handle is a ground service & maintenance scene depicting crews fueling a C20 single winged observer plane with a C30 plane standing ready. Outstanding detail can be seen throughout the action of the crew. The word Tanken meaning “to fuel” in this case the airplane, can be seen below.
On the left side of the grip is a Flak crew in training, manning an Anti-aircraft Gun and ready for action. The words Leichte Flak “Light Aircraft Gun” can be seen below. Trademark of maker and other specific numbers can be seen on the bottom of the beer stein.
While I’m sure this is not a one of a kind personal beer stein, it is the only one I’ve seen in my collecting years. This stein pattern must be rated as Very Rare to find in the militaria collecting community and would look great together with a Luftwaffe Dagger or Etched Dress Bayonet to complete a visually pleasing display. See picture. Truly a beautiful and difficult to acquire Third Reich Luftwaffe beer stein.
Condition: Mint, no cracks or chips anywhere.

ALCOSO
Long - Obverse - Single Etch |
Long - Obverse - Single Etch
In the Revised Volume this Neutral etch is NOT featured in the Alcoso section but IS featured in the F.W. Holler area.
This particular etch again shows the strong relationship between Alcoso and F.W. Holler. While this etch is Value
Rated as Common to find, this is the first time I have seen this etch with an Alcoso trademark.
The beautiful panel has a border of oak leaves and acorns (strength and honor) surrounding the Remembrance Motto in a simple yet meaningful way. See Pictures.
Condition: The condition of this example is astonishing. Absolutely MINT, no runner marks or missing plating. See pictures. Any collector would enjoy having this example in their collection.

Carl Eickhorn
Short – 3231 Observation Plane Over a Village
One of the most difficult to find of all Eickhorn motifs is this depiction of a small Observer Plane flying through the clouds over a village complete with buildings and what appears to be a Church. The detail is a real credit to the skills of these Etching Masters. See pictures. Centered in the Etch is the Remembrance Motto in the well-known Eickhorn Ribbon. m
The tip end of the etch depicts an open winged Eagle flying within a Wreath of Oak Leaves and Acorns. A truly beautiful, very rare etch to find and display.
The condition of the entire bayonet to include the blade is absolutely MINT. No missing plating and the etch is crisp on the blade. See pictures. None better.
A hard to find etch in Mint condition!

Short – Single Etch – Luftwaffe Gulls Pattern |
|
This short variety produced by Carl Eickhorn having the 1935 – 1941 trademark has the hard to find Luftwaffe Gulls Pattern. This pattern features two Gulls flying away from the viewer within a wreath of acorns and oak leaves at the tip end, the Remembrance Motto in a ribbon centered and a closed winged National Eagle closest to the ricasso. See Pictures.
The condition of this example is certainly NMINT or MINT as there is no wear to the blade or hilt areas. All the plating is present and no runner marks can be seen. See pictures.
As stated in The Addendum it is my opinion that this Luftwaffe Gulls pattern (among others) were being produced in advance of a newer catalog perhaps 1940. There were very few of the Luftwaffe Gulls pattern produced and perhaps only a limited quantity sold within the Carl Eickhorn Company accounting for their rarity among collectors today.
This is a beautiful etched dress bayonet with a very hard to find Luftwaffe pattern missing from most collections.

Carl Eickhorn Long – Pommel Etch |
|
This long type (Enlistedman’s) dress bayonet is etched only on the Hilt with Carl Eickhorn’s closed winged Eagle Pommel etch.
Pommel etches have been reproduced after the war and the
Pre-45 examples are very difficult to find in the collecting community. I personally have not seen a Pre-45 Pommel etch in many years until this example. See pictures. A chapter in my Revised/Updated Volume concerns Pommel etches and what to look for. Many advanced collections do not have a real pre-45 Pommel etch included in their collections.
The condition of the bayonet is very respectable, no missing plating and very few light runner marks.

CARL EICKHORN Short: Honor - Strength - Freedom Etched Dress Bayonet
J.A. HENKELS Trademarked |
Obverse: Honor, Strength, Freedom (in Gothic Script) Reverse: Trademarked by J.A. Henkels These etched dress bayonets were awarded to the graduates of the five Student League Schools located throughout Germany. The Carl Eickhorn Company usually contracted with the schools to supply these awards, however one contract was given to a J.A. Henkels salesman and consequently turned over to Carl Eickhorn to complete the order with the Henkels trademark shown on the reverse. See Pictures. For more information see my REVISED Volume on page 136. Just finding an Honor, Strength, Freedom by Carl Eickhorn is quite difficult to find in the collecting community, but finding one with a J.A. Henkels trademark should be considered Value Rated as Very Rare.
Condition: Mint Minus, all plating with a very bit of wear on the tip is present and like new. The tip wear does not interfere with the etching or any other part of the example. A great conditioned example of a VERY DIFFICULT etched bayonet to find. The bayonet is featured in the Wittmann & Wayne portion of the SOS 2022 video.

Carl Eickhorn
Long – DOUBLE ETCHED INFANTRY |

This long, double etched dress bayonet was originally produced by the Carl Eickhorn Company and is also trademarked by their distributor Peter Kolb in Amberg.
The obverse pattern is Eickhorn’s Nr. 3220 (crossed rifles) as seen in their 1938 catalog and is Value Rated: Scarce to find in the original Volume and Revised Volume. See pictures.
The reverse pattern cites military participation in:
Infanterie Regiment Nr. 41 – Amberg – Bayr – Ostmark
Notice the Distributor Peter Kolb is also located in Amberg. An easy sale to the Regiment for Kolb. More information on this double etch can be found in the Updated and Revised Volume on pages 125/131.
What makes this double etched dress bayonet so special? It’s the magnificent condition this example gives the viewer! See pictures. The frosting looks great behind the lettering on both sides. No missing plating or “runner marks” can be seen, it’s ALL there. Even has a MINT Red felt in the rifle slot. If your collection needs a double etch, this is it!

Carl Eickhorn
Long – DOUBLE ETCHED - COMMUNICATIONS UNIT #25 |

This long, double etched bayonet has Eickhorn’s 1938 catalog etch Nr. 3219 on the obverse. Two Wehrmacht Eagles (one on both ends of the etch) a ribbon expressing the Remembrance Motto centered, with decorative oak leaves and acorns throughout. See pictures.
The reverse cites military service in:
Nachrichten – Abteilung Nr. 25 - Bad Cannstatt
(Communications Unit Nr. 25 Bad Cannstatt). The Carl Eickhorn 1935/1941 squirrel trademark is stamped into the reverse ricasso. See Pictures.
Back when the first Volume was published (2002) I designated the reverse etch as Scarce to find. It seems to be even harder today!
The MINT Minus condition of this example would be difficult to upgrade and an example any collector would be proud to display. No ‘runner marks” and all the plating on blade and Hilt is there. A very small bit of plating has come off the end of the crossguard (normal to find).
Examples like this are getting almost impossible to find in the collecting community. See pictures.

Short - Single Etch - Eagle |
When I was offered this Carl Julius Krebs etch I just couldn't pass it up. The Krebs Trademark is seldom seen and considered a rare one for collectors to find.
This etched dress bayonet was originally produced by the Robt. Klaas Firm and sold to Krebs for their retail. Both Carl Julius and Peter Daniel Krebs bought exclusively from Robt. Klaas.
This etch consisted of Klaas's "Curled Cross" bookends with a beautiful opened-winged Eagle clutching a Swastika within a Wreath centered, and the Remembrance Motto flanking both Eagle's Wings. See Pictures.
The condition of this example is MINT with all plating and frosting present and no "runner marks" found.
Truly an excellent example to display with a Scarce Trademark.

F.W. Hӧller’s NEUTRAL etch for all Wehrmacht Forces |

This was F.W. Hӧller’s NEUTRAL etch for all Wehrmacht Forces. The pattern shows a scalloped with floral end border closest to the point, a MachineGun Crew ready for action, an ArtilleryCrew centered and a Panzer cresting a hill closest to the Hilt. The Remembrance Motto is within the top border over all three depictions. See pictures. More information on this etch can be found in my Revised and Updated Spiral bound Volume German Etched Dress Bayonets 1933 – 1945 on page 205 Figure B.
The condition of this example would be rated NMINT or MINT as there is a very slight smug on the upper obverse Hilt. Honestly, it is mostly unnoticeable. No plating loss and the blade etch is absolutely MINT. A very desirable example for any collection.

Short - Double Etched Dress Bayonet
This double etched dress bayonet was produced from an order from their Distributor Hans Prem in Amberg. The Distriburor's name is stamped on the reverse while the Holler Trademark is on the obverse.
The obverse etch is Nr. ES 104 in Holler's 1938 catalog for all Wehrmacht troops.
The Reverse sites military service in Infer. Regt. 41 - Amberg/Bayer, Ostmark. See pictures. A beautiful Scarce example for sure. Short - Single Etch - STAG GRIP - Dress Bayonet |
Illustrated as Nr. ES 102 in Holler's 1938 catalog, this Neutral etch for all Wehrmacht personnel is somewhat Scarce to find today.
The etch features the "blocked" bookends style with a closed winged Eagle clutching a Swastika at both ends of the etch with the Remembrance Motto centered. See pictures.
Besides the absolutely MINT condition of this example the original owner opted for the high cost of Staghorn Grip Plates to enhance his overall dress appearance. Very few Staghorn Grip Plates are seen on Third Reich dress bayonets today because of this high additional cost option. In my second book, The Addendum, I have presented an entire chapter on Staghorn examples.
The condition of this example (as with other bayonet selections from this menu) is something most collectors appreciate. No "runner" marks or missing plating can be seen. See pictures. The Staghorn Grip Plates fit perfectly into the Hilt area.
While the etch is a bit Scarce to find, the MINT condition along with the special Grip Plates make this piece of history a "must have" for serious collectors.

Robert Klaas Short – Single Etch – Klaas #1264
This is another difficult etch for collectors to find in the collecting community. To my knowledge only Robt. Klaas produced and sold this etch in their own Showrooms.
The unusual and beautiful etch consists of the Remembrance Motto within the wide fuller and broadens out to meet the ricasso area and a small open winged “stubby” Eagle over a Wehrmacht Helmet. See pictures. Quite unique and not copied in any way by other production companies. On the longer examples, two oak leaves can also be observed at the beginning of the Motto. This etch can be seen in the Revised/Updated Volume of German Etched Dress Bayonets – 1933 – 1945 on page 258 both models can be observed.
Condition: as with many other examples on this website, this example is in Mint condition for collectors to enjoy. No runner marks or missing plating can be seen.

Short - Single Etch |

This beautiful example of Puma Werk's Neutral (for all members of the military) etch is featured in my Revised Volume on page 238. See picture and description.
A smaller open einged Eagle can be seen within the decorative scroll work at the tip end. The Remembrance Motto is centered and a Wehrmacht Helmet lays upon the scrolls at the ricasso end. A border of wavy lines completes the etch above and below the Motto. A truly artistic and eye catching design to be sure. The Puma Cat logo can be seen on the reverse ricasso.
The overall condition of this example is absolutely MINT. No missing plating or runner marks can be seen. Very hard to find 90 year old examples in this condition. See pictures.
